New York City is covered with illegal billboards and advertisements. One random day, civilians decided to take back the public space by covering over 120 illegal billboards with original works of art.

    That’s amazing! …
That’s amazing! These adverts really get on my nerves too…and the art’s prettier than just straight defacement.

But what’s an ACD? Is it like the US equivalent of an ASBO?

    just a buncha …
just a buncha hypocrite white people, as usual. bringing in some middle class yuppy artists to paint buildings is basically the same thing as plastering them with ads. same people. same message. we know what to do with your time/money/space better than you do.

If i want to buy something i will buy it for what it is used for not because it is posted all over the world. I get turned off products when they are pushed into my face. Art work is much more important then adds

    TWAT.. The idea …
TWAT.. The idea here is not so much that these AD spaces are illegal, but that AD spaces are eye-sores, and replaced by artistic content they become the opposite. In the end it’s easier to go after spaces used illegally, rather than the big CC boards used legally of course.

But then of course there still is a problem with the fact that these spaces are being used illegally. So you could fact with legal action against those spaces, or just simply use your energy covering them with ART.

    TWAT.

    It’s a fine line… …
It’s a fine line… They got arrested because NPA Outdoors called the cops on them. What the white washers/artists did is no more or less illegal than what NPA Outdoors does. No landlords fought the case in court, so 2 arrests were completely let off the hook and the other 2 were acquitted.

    a friend of mine …
a friend of mine used to make public seating in NYC (as places to rest are a scarce commodity in most american cities) and would have them taken down almost immediately by NYPD. That was, until she added fake advertising on them. The NYPD left up any with the ads for months.

it’s an incredibly frustrating world we live in
